Du/You - Ingo Gerken - 2006

format: Mirror /Slipper

Ingo Gerken’s art reveals subversions with commonplace objects with the simplest means; gauging possible potential from a distance. In Du/You, Gerken presents the viewer simply with an old bedroom slipper on the floor, positioned in front of a small square mirror. Often  said that mirrors cannot lie, Gerken’s Du/You demonstrates this is not the case. What first could appear as a disregarded piece of footwear, becomes transformed into pair of slippers depending on the viewers standpoint. Although absent of human presence, but still a reflection of the soul, this odd readymade object becomes a silent testament to someone who was once here, and perhaps the most apt metaphorical exit point to leave the exhibition.
