WHAT DO WE WANT? - 2000 - Leonie Weber

Chicago is a city with a very high crime rate. Gun fights are the daily routine of many neighbourhoods. On the other hand, Chicago police is omnipresent. The culture and cultivation of fear and the paradoxy of the threat of crime on one hand and the knowledge that the police are involved in criminal practices in many ways are the starting points of this installation.

format:

Installation, size variable
neonsign, police warning sign, broken window, polaroid series

LAST ONE OUT PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, 2009 - Leonie Weber

Last One Out Please Turn Out The Lights was conceived during an artist residency at Sculpture Space in Utica, New York. The installation of sculptural models and watercolor drawing reflects on the last 50 years of the town's economic and social development: At the eastern edge of the so-called "rust belt", the oldest industrial area of the US, Utica was hit hard by industrial decline; many jobs were lost and the population shrunk by about half.

The components of the installation vary in scale and do not necessarily correspond in terms of position. Emblematic of Weber's questioning of the so-called normal, the subtle but perceptible displacement of perspectives, the fragmented character, and the incongruence of the models' sides also refer to another characteristic of Utica: One of the country's first mental hospitals, the "New York State Lunatic Asylum," was founded there in the middle of the 19th century.

format: Wood, cardboard, plexi, brass, plaster, acrylic paint, emulsion paint, glue, watercolor on paper

dimensions: 140 x 250 x 350 cm / 55 x 98,5 x 138 in
